Learning in Virtual Reality

“We always overestimate the change that will happen in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction.” — Bill Gates

By Alan Sitomer, CEO of EyeQVR

Virtual reality learning is an inevitability. Get ready to shift!

Virtual reality has made giant strides in creating memorable, immersive experiences and now it is about to change education forever. Take a moment to let that sink in because right now more than 99% of teachers or students have not yet even experienced VR. But they will.

Backstory

Personally, I am a lifer in education. I am a California Teacher of the Year Award Winner, I am the author of 20 books for educators and young readers, and I am also notoriously dubious about fads in learning. (Ah, the junk I have seen peddled!) Yet my own personal credentials, carry no weight. VR has built a better mousetrap and whether the most acclaimed teachers in the nation approve or not matters little.

Austerity instruction will only prove to be a gatekeeper for so long. After that, the best pedagogical tool to deliver the most efficacious learning will win. And virtual reality will be that tool. Unequivocally.

Virtual Reality Learning

Virtual Reality learning offers experiential instruction that taps the power of human empathy and understanding in ways that simply can’t be described unless you have experienced VR for yourself. To communicate what it’s like in VR through words to someone who has never experienced VR is like trying to describe swimming to someone who has never taken a dip in the water. It’s simply not possible to comprehend how profound it is to immerse learners INSIDE the content through VR learning modules.

Right Now

Currently, our young learners read about George Washington crossing the Delaware, they hear about Harriet Tubman fleeing for the north, or maybe they watch a 2D video about the Louisiana Purchase. All are good strategies considering the previously available technology but none of them match the power of putting students inside the boat, side by side with General Washington as he faces a tremendous Christmastime storm and pulls off an against-all-odds victory. Now THAT is an unforgettable experience.

The significance of these historical events come to life through virtual reality’s pedagogical power. Unparalleled by any other current learning module, VR education offers unprecedented dynamism, empathy, and data insights in learner performance and retention.

Who is Using VR?

Many top tier companies including NASA, the NFL, The Department of Defense, and Boeing are turning to VR to better educate their employees.

Why? Because education through virtual reality is the best learning device. Whether it be virtual football training, going to Mars, or creating a simulated flying experience, there is no doubt that VR is the future of education across all industries.
