🧳 What Happens When Techies in Silicon Valley Leave?

Did people even want them there to begin with?

Twitter, Square, Facebook and perhaps even Google are all allowing their employees to work from anywhere in the country, perhaps in the world … forever.

The question then becomes: do the employees of these companies still need to live in the Bay Area?

Apparently the answer is NO for the many who are streaming out of the Valley in droves. How many leave and whether they ever come back is bound to reshape Silicon Valley and will have dramatic impacts for the far larger number who work in industries that support this tech intelligentsia.

As the pandemic widens the gap between the wealthy and the rest of us, it’s allowing tech companies (which have remained relatively unaffected by the pandemic, in fact they may even have thrived) to become even wealthier by moving their entire workforce to remote work.

When employees work remotely, most companies save money: no more $$ for office space, worrying about late arrivals, parking and utility costs, far less liability and insurance costs, and greater worker productivity.
