Personal Sound Concepts

The title of this post is the title of an online class about sound production that I constructed, independent of any institution or organization. I am pro educational institutions and organizations and did teach in a classroom at The New School in New York for a couple semesters, but I wanted to put something together on my own, with flexibility for both the students and myself, at an extremely affordable cost as far as education goes.

I’ve offered the class a few times over the last couple years, usually spread out by a few months. The newest session is beginning March 1st, which is very soon.

The course offers ideas about using non-traditional sound sources for creating music. This begins with listening to the world differently and redefining how one considers music, how it is heard, how it is produced, how it is constructed. The discussions are both conceptual and also immediately concrete because the ideas are directed towards a practice, and the exercises/assignments are steps in a process that should yield a completed piece of music at the end of the six weeks.

I call it Personal Sound Concepts not just because it covers a practice that is important to me and part of my approach to producing music, but because it is meant to foster a personal, individualized process and sound world for everyone. This is something that cannot be overtly taught, though one can be guided in a direction towards that end and assisted with finding what works for them. This is the goal of the class - to open up and discover by exploring within certain constraints. It is rooted in sound, but is applicable across different artistic forms.
