Kumbalangi is a model fishing village and India’s first eco-tourism village located about 13 kilometers from the central part of Ernakulam. This calm and peaceful place gives an insight into the past lives of the Keralan fisheries communities. Some of the things that people can do are crab farming, Chinese net fishing and taking a cruise through the backwaters in a canoe. There are mangroves nearby the village and many kinds of birds live there, so one can really have a good time watching birds. This centre is recognised to be one of the largest Elephant training centre in Kerala and also home for disabled /rescued and orphaned elephants. It is possible to see how these gigantic animals are trained, fed, and washed using water from the neighboring water source such as a river. It is more recommended to visit the park early in the morning as the elephants take their bath during the early morning. The center is also very important in raising awareness of the community on the protection of elephant and animal in general.

Sitting hidden in Ernakulam district, near to High Court, Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is lovingly known as the ‘green lung’ of the locality. But what a concentration of species is here; the sanctuary has been identified as having 72 or more types of birds. Due to the thick growth of mangroves and calm nature of the place, it can be considered as a good place to pull away from the busy life of the city. There is a watchtower located within the precinct of the sanctuary and one can get to see the resident and migratory birds in plenty especially during migration.

Not in Ernakulam though in close proximity to it, the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary also famously referred to as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is to be mentioned here. Located some 60 kilometers outside the city, it is very famous for being a protected area teeming with various wildlife and is especially famous among bird watchers. Known after the famous ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali, the sanctuary spreads over the area of more than 1,000 hectares and encompasses over 300 bird species most of which are endangered and endemic. Touring is allowed and this kind of guided tours bear great information on the avian wiped out wonders of the basin.

While many of the people are aware of the St. George’s Forane Church, Edappally the antique church along with other parts of the church heritage are frequently unnoticed. Based on folklore, the dam was constructed by evils (Bhoothams). At present It is a perfect spot for trekking, boating and for having a picnic. The reserve forest which is in close proximity has diverse wildlife and consists of different trekking trails for the tourist.

Of all such places, one such rarely discovered place is Illithode, situated close to the Malayattoor Forest. It has breathtaking sceneries resulting from its location next to the River Periyar which forms great places for leisure and a good shoot.
