Why I Chose Vinyl Kitchen Flooring Over A Wooden Floor

Why did I choose vinyl kitchen flooring over a wooden floor for my kitchen? Find out in my latest post!

This week I got a new kitchen for my two bed terraced house in the East of England. Like many homeowners, I obsessed in great detail about what kind of kitchen I should get. Would I go for a traditional, rustic style kitchen? Or go for something ultra modern? I went down the rustic route, because I live in a quaint little Georgian house built at the turn of the century. While a modern house would be nice, many of the original fixtures and fittings remain, so a traditional look would have saved me a lot of time and money.

However this is where I was left at a cross roads. Should I keep with the full, traditional style and go for a stone or rustic wooden floor for my new kitchen? I knew this would create the most authentic look, and fit the overall feel of the house, but I hated the thought of actually having to clean the damn thing. Plus, both these kinds of flooring are expensive, needing a huge amount of care and maintenance almost every year. Not to mention that any spilt drink would have to be cleaned up instantly if I went down the traditional wood flooring route, which is not ideal for a guy who has the lads round every weekend to watch the football along with several beers!

It was then that I did some research online and discovered vinyl kitchen flooring. I had heard of vinyl flooring for the bathroom, but vinyl kitchen flooring to me was brand new. And it literally revolutionised my thinking on how to fit out my new kitchen!

Most people, when they hear ‘vinyl flooring’, would imagine horrible black and white tiled, sticky flooring, with a cheap look. But when I visited the local vinyl flooring store, I found that the true lie of the land was far different. Vinyl… doesnt look like vinyl! In fact, you can get this kind of flooring in a wide range of styles, there was even wooden style flooring, and a very realistic look at that!

This was a true revelation, because it meant I could design my kitchen, along side my designers, with a traditional look in mind, but with a flooring to match, and with all of the great benefits of vinyl.

There are a number of benefits I can see with vinyl kitchen flooring over wood:

Durability was definitely a plus for me. As a guy in my twenties, my house is often used as the launch pad for a big night out, which invariably means spilt drinks, food stains and the occasional vomit patch, something that even the most rugged wooden floor would struggle to endure. I needed a flooring that was hard wearing — vinyl was the answer!

Low maintenance costs came next. Who can really be bothered to keep up with the maintenance needed for a wooden floor to stop it going rotten? Or the risk of cracking a tiled floor? Not to mention the arduous task of having to scrape mouldy food out of the grouted gaps between tiles. That’s not for me — Vinyl kitchen flooring looked ideal as there’s literally zero maintenance needed.

Finally, price. Vinyl kitchen flooring is by far the cheapest solution I could find.

All in all, Vinyl is the only way to go, for price, low maintenance and durability, leaving me with more time to enjoy my lovely kitchen and less time spent cleaning up after myself!
