“I’m All In” = Raising Money For An App
You have Jack | Six, off suit. They have AA, AK, QQ and JJ.
In the 2015 / 2016 timeframe, raising money for any new app is similar to going all in, pre-flop, against the best poker players in the world.
You’re down to four opponents: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.
You’ve just received your bankroll from friends and family. They have their $500 riding on your ability to outsmart the table.
You’re down to your last $500. F, T, I and P have $25,000, $10,000, $15,000 and $12,500 respectively.
Your cards: J | 6, off suit.
You’re first to act, and F, T, I AND P all seem asleep at the wheel, bored of the game, and ready to go home.
T0 increase your chip stack, you go all in as the first to act, assuming your table mates will fold. Why wouldn’t they, you have nothing to lose so they must assume you have a good hand, right?
F calls. T calls. I calls. P calls. AA, AK (suited), QQ. JJ.
Flop: A, K, Q. Turn: J. River: K.
You have a pair of J’s, decent hand.
F has a full house, Aces over Kings.
Twitter has a full house, Kings over Aces.
Instagram has a full house, Queens over Kings.
Pinterest has a full house, Jacks over Kings.
Your Jacks pair were crushed. Didn’t stand a chance.
F, T, I & P didn’t even flinch. Was like they didn’t know you were there.
You’re mind and heart were racing, you’re all in against the big dogs.
Then the winners are shepherded out on pedals of roses by big security guards and beautiful princesses.
You’re sitting by the slots smoking a cig wondering what just happened.
“We’re all people, playing the same game, with the same tools and the same chips. It was just their lucky day.
Maybe Kenny Rogers was right…”
The good news is, there is always a new day. And the best poker players manage their losses as well as their wins.
Start each new day as if you hadn’t won or lost in the past. The future is where the money and action are.
