Ticketing Florida’s Youth

Officers issuing tickets to kids… for good behavior

Never a dull day in the Sunshine State, but if you’ve heard and read enough news headlines about Florida you’d think there’s never a good day there. Well, police officers in West Melbourne are aiming to highlight the good in their Florida city, one child at a time.

As the school year draws to a close for many young students in Florida, USA Today reports that West Melbourne’s police officers are increasingly on the lookout for kids behaving, well, nicely.

In an effort to improve neighborhood relations and to promote positive interactions between cops and the community, “Operation Commendable Kids” is encouraging officers to issue tickets that reward primary and middle school students (grades K-8) for making smart decisions.

These special tickets are issued for a range of actions — from wearing helmets while biking to community service — and are redeemable at a number of participating businesses in the community.

The school year has not yet ended, but officers have begun ticketing and it’s being very well-received. Kaylee and Connor Eddleman, sister and brother, got their tickets for wearing helmets. Their father, Scott, loves it. “It lets the kids know that the police aren’t always the bad guys,” he said.
