Changing your mindset from Hierarchies culture to Networks to Foster Innovation

We all know how complex it is to innovate in companies that have a traditional organisational hierarchies culture where many ideas and actions come up from different silos without any communication among one another. So we need to think more and more of a model that helps to change that way of acting and thinking in order to let things happen faster. At the same time we have gone through times of crises and recessions in the world, what makes the use of each person within the organizational structure to be allocated for problem solving. Large organizations need a well-defined hierarchical model that makes the company’s operation roll on. However, how to innovate in a hierarchical environment where there is more and more competition among silos and the bureaucracy of their processes and rules, which are fundamental to the basic operation, are always the priority? The author of “Accelerate” , John P. Kotter, cites in his book a very interesting approach, which we are already experiencing for some time with some success in the UX Strategy area. It proposes a framework called “Dual operating system” where the two structures, traditional hierarchical and Networking coexist. This second enables a more agile and dynamic process. The purpose is to have a more collaborative environment, with internal teams of the company (Insourcing), coming out of their traditional hierarchical structure to work for a certain time in a soaking in project to solve a particular problem. Thinking about all of this, we work today at UX Strategy on different projects using Design Thinking to inspire multidisciplinary teams, having a Core Team for project, where each team works in a working group outside the traditional organizational hierarchies, without leaders in a more collaborative and agile environment. That way of working have been proved being very efficient and we have achieved good results even with a not yet well established culture.
