As many of you have already learned, Facebook announced at the beginning of the month the shutdown of a few acquired properties, most notably our beloved Moves iOS app. All Moves data will be permanently deleted on July 31st.

All is not yet lost, however, as you can now use our Fabric Moves web importer to save your location history today! Or do it directly from the Fabric iOS app. See the iOS app instructions at the bottom of this post if you need them.

Where one story ends, another often begins. Moves, acquired by Facebook in 2014 and never developed further, was an inspiration for us in the early days of the Quantified Self craze, and we’re extremely grateful for the effort the team put into building it.

Two years after launching the first version of Fabric, we believe it is what Moves could’ve been and is the best alternative and replacement for most people.

Not only does Fabric compile a location history log with a negligible battery cost and in complete privacy, but it also adds the photos already available in your camera roll and the people that you hang out with.

It also gives you full control over your log, encourages adding details, and lets you search your history.

Finally, Fabric keeps us connected beyond that fun real-world moment we shared with friends by letting everyone who was present for it collect the artifacts of the experience in collaborative moments — whether those be photos, zingers, or notes for later reference.

If you loved Moves as much as we did, grab Fabric on the App Store and start by importing your Moves location data!

Here’s the six simple steps you can complete in the Fabric iOS app:

Go to your Fabric Settings tab, tap the Moves “M” logo. Tap “Go to Moves >”. Log into Moves. If you’re logging in with Facebook and use 2-factor authentication, you may find our quick guide for that process helpful as well.

Scroll down on each of the next two Moves screens until you see the “Export Data” link and the “Export” button. That’s it! In about a minute, your import will end, and in another couple minutes, your data will be available in your Fabric app.
