BMI RELEARNED!

Hey… Just a minute… Have you heard about the Big F.A.T Lies? Before running off to take that weight reduction pill or going to sweat out in the gym there are some things you must factor into consideration — you need to check up with your doctor.

You probably want to know if you are fit for this herculean task (a weight loss or healthy living program) or you want know exactly which strategy would work, because some weight reduction programs could be damaging to ur health but let’s cut this story for another day …

Straight up to the task what the heck is BMI …?

BMI should not sound like some Africa Voodoo… it has been a scale that was set by some medical experts to screen or gauge groups of people who are underweight, overweight, obese or normal …well I just made it simple at least u got a new lingo you could use to impress yourself.

Suffice to say BMI translates to Body Mass Index ..it considers the weight and height and those are factored into enabling the physician ascertain people who are in the risk groups of being malnourished or nourished, though this concept is a bit of a misnomer… watch out for my article where I’ll demystify this.

There are lots of Apps that can calculate BMI automatically and standards generally acceptable from the calculated results but for a layman you should be restricted to this Formula set aside by World Health Organisation (WHO) and Center for Disease Control (CDC):

BMI= Weight (in Kg)/Height^2 (m)

How do we go about this???

I don’t like algebrooooo, but let get down to business …the average man weighs 70kg and the Height is about 1.70m. Watch the calibration system used in your country, for those in America probably would find a fuss on the Kilogram and Metres; you could get Ounces or Inches, it doesn’t matter but the standard is in Kilogram and meters.

Now let’s sweat it out

70/(1.70)^2 = ?

70/2.89= 24kg/m^2

Now that is the BMI for an average adult man. What does it say about this man?

Hmm let’s go to our standard:

Phew!

According to the CDC recommendation, this man should fall in:

<18.5= Underweight and we got 24.20 …nope not this group fellas

25.0–29.9 = Overweight …nah, not at all

>30 = Obese …hmm never

18.5–24.9 = ideal! …yippee this fella got the ideal BMI.

Does this mean he is healthy?

Huh well, find out in another article when I demystify BMI.
