5 times metal artists proved metalhead stereotypes wrong

All metalheads know that we can’t go a single day listening to our favorite bands, or rocking their merch without hearing some lame ass cliche about the music we love. Artists are just as sick of it as we are, and many of them prove the haters wrong everyday.

  1. “Metalheads are stupid idiots.”

Hi. I listen to heavy metal, and I hold a steady 3.8 GPA. No, I did not use black magic to give myself intelligence, and neither did Tom Morello of the band Rage Against the Machine.

The legendary guitar player graduated top of his class in high school, and later earned a degree in political science from Harvard. We won’t talk about how he became a stripper afterwards though —

2. “All metalheads are just violent brutes.”

Everyone knows that when a metalhead rocks out to their favorite tunes they want to start burning down buildings and kicking puppies, right? You’re tripping if you think this is true, and the perfect man to prove this stereotype wrong is none other than Marilyn Manson.

Marilyn is most known for his ‘crazy’ appearance, and most people outside of the genre see him as a ‘scary’ or ‘violent’. This video shows how down-to-earth and well-behaved he is, especially when compared to some of these interviewers that just make an ass of themselves.

3. “People who listen to Metal worship the devil.”

I won’t lie, many bands use satanic imagery on album covers and t-shirts, but that’s just cause everyone thinks it looks cool. We don’t show it, but most metal heads are too scared to go anywhere near that stuff. Most artists, such as Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, identify with other religions as well.

Dave is well known for being a born again Christian. He even went as far as not playing some of his own songs because he felt they had satanic themes. As you can see from the tweet, he stands by his decisions and beliefs better than some other Christians that don’t like metal music — but we won’t light that dumpster fire today.

4. “Metal artists are untalented — screaming takes no skill.”

Nothing makes me want to scream more than this stereotype, but it wouldn’t sound any good because I have never learned how to do a metal scream. Many singers talk about how many years they’ve practiced to become as good as they are. One guitar player named Jared Dines conducted a social experiment to see if the stereotype was true or not.

After watching this video it’s pretty clear to see that screaming does take some talent and years of practice. Suck it haters.

5. “Metalheads are just lazy bums.”

Along with video game nerds, a lot of metalheads are seen as adults that live in their parent’s basement. Many fans and bands have proven this wrong, but one band stands above the rest: Slipknot.

Slipknot’s band members have all had their share of hardships and tragedies; yet, they fought through all of it and continue to make music to this day. If all metalheads really were lazy, bands like Slipknot would’ve called it quits years ago. Hell, there probably wouldn’t be any bands at all because of how many years of dedication it takes just to get started.
