Don’t Hold Your Breath For a New American Battle Tank
War Is Boring

Canadian Forces Afghanistan ‘tried’ to get by with their lower cost/lighter weight LAVIII and even considered phasing out main battle tanks altogether in favor of a variation of the LAV equipped with a 105mm gun. Experience in Afghanistan, however, solidified recognition of the need for a true main battle tank. Treaded vehicles could cross wet/muddy terrain where even the eight-wheeled LAVIII could become stuck. Additionally, there’s the fact that a ‘tank’ has a greater physical ‘presence’ on the battlefield…potentially disheartening its enemies where a light armored vehicle, even if no less impervious to insurgents’ small arms, would not have the same psychological effect.
