The history of Damascus steel

Damascus steel was the prominent steel used to develop blades. These blades were considered to be sturdy and rough. The steel is named after Damascus, which is a city in Syria. The Damascus blades were manufactured in the Near East from ingots of wootz steel that were imported from India. The Arabs introduced the Indian wootz steel to Damascus, where a weapons industry thrived.

The decline in production of Damascus steel

The development of these swords ceased by 1750 due to British rule in India as there was possible loss of knowledge on the crafting techniques through secrecy and lack of transmission. In addition, there was also lack of trace impurities in the metals. Moreover, there was a disruption in the trade routes which gradually led to the downfall of the production of Damascus swords.
