History

The city of Fairfax got its name from Thomas Fairfax. King Charles gave Mr. Fairfax 5 million acres of land in the northern part of Virgina. Providence is a well known town in Virginia and was established in 1805. Fairfield was the location of the first battle that took place during the civil war. Another battle took place a few years later. Fairfax was named the town of Fairfax in 1859 and was incorporated as an actual town in 1874. It wasn’t until 1961 that it became a city. Fairfax is separated from Fairfax County, though it is still the county seat. All in all, the city has a very rich history.

Fairfax County Trains Aspiring Leaders

FAIRFAX, Va. — According to the youth in Fairfax County, a leader is not defined by age, rather, someone who is willing to serve themselves and their community. “They help other people, they educate other people,” said Aru Rajpurohit, a Chantilly high school student. “Someone who will put themselves before others,”said Daniel Hwang, a Centerville high school student. That is exactly what a select group of 30 out of 100 candidates are doing with the county’s youth leadership program that works with the public school system and the county government to help students link local government with their everyday lives. Fairfax county has taken teaching students to a knew level. Instead of just teaching the basics (math, reading, science, etc.), they are providing students with a real opportunity to get involved in their community. This provides students with a way to learn the value of a good education and to learn the way their community government works. More than that, however, it provides them with an opportunity to decide what they want their futures to look like, what changes they want to make in their community. It is teaching them to navigate their local government so that one day they can decide how to run things. This is a great way to teach students the interworking of their community and a deeper understanding of the political world.
