A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap, placed over a tooth to cover and restore it’s shape, size and strength and also to improve its appearance. The crown when cemented by an expert Endodontist encases the entire visible portion of the affected tooth that lies at and above the gum line. Not just on the root canal, but there are several other treatments when a person may require crowns on their teeth and this is, of course, at the discretion of dentist because they can better judge the patient’s requirements.

Why are Dental Crowns Needed?

  2. To protect tooth from decay and to hold together parts of cracked tooth.
  3. To restore an already broken or a worn down tooth.
  4. To cover and support a tooth with a large filling.
  5. To hold a dental bridge in place.
  6. To cover a crooked or discolored tooth.
  7. For improving the appearance of a tooth by the Cosmetic Dentist.

Types of Crowns

Permanent crowns are either made from stainless steel, metal, porcelain, resin or ceramic.

Stainless Steel Crowns

These crowns are prefabricated ones that are used on permanent teeth, primarily as a temporary measure. Stainless steel protects the tooth or filling. These are recommended in back teeth due to its unaesthetic appearance. However, these crowns offer great strength.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

These crowns are recommended in teeth where strength and aesthetics both are needed. Metals used in crowns include alloys having a high content of gold, platinum or base-metal alloys. These crowns withstand biting and chewing forces and probably last the longest in terms of wear down.

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns have the most natural appearance than any other crown type. Therefore, these are most suitable in the front teeth and people with metal allergies. Majority of cosmetic dentistsprefer using them for front and back teeth.

Gold Crowns

These crowns are crafted from yellow or white dental gold and are extremely resilient and resistant to biting forces, making them best choice to be deployed in areas where there is a little biting space.

Broken or root treated teeth can only be saved with the crown as the damaged or brittle teeth need support from further damage. For such treatments, you must select a validated and expert dentist in Pakistan that can perform the function accurately, without damaging other teeth.
