Sasha Savvy Loves to Code — Fostering a STEM Way of Life for Black Girls and Families

I first learned of Sasha Savvy Loves to Code after reading about the young author, Sasha Ariel Alston’s, successful Kickstarter campaign, which raised almost 4x her goal. The book title and narrative immediately grabbed my attention. Sasha Savvy Loves to Code is a wonderful book that shines a positive light on youth and families who have historically been underrepresented or misrepresented in print and media.

After ordering and receiving my copy, I couldn’t get over how much personality the title character Sasha Savvy has. Her vibrant persona and energy shines brilliantly on the cover illustration and throughout the book.

While reading the book, I was captivated by how Sasha, the author, didn’t just write a book about a black girl who learns to code and begins to see herself as a coder, but rather she wrote about a lifestyle — a way of living where black girls and families are immersed in positivity, STEM, healthy eating, African diaspora and pop culture; and just being authentic and having fun.

Sasha Savvy Loves to Code demonstrates that coding and STEM are not just the latest trend for black folks and other underrepresented groups, but rather a significant aspect of our daily lives. In her book, Sasha Ariel Alston, brilliantly illuminates how much representation matters and why it is so important that the tech world be a safe, diverse, and inclusive space for black children, adults, and communities.
