Johnny Slam, ‘Nuclear Medicine Conclave’ Fan Club Founder (1977–2019)

Johnny Slam, born Carl James Sunshine, has died after a long battle with society’s expectations. He was 42 years old.
Johnny would never talk about his youth, but he was a good kid. Around the age of 19 though, something went off. He changed his name, started doing a variety of drugs, and joined the road crew for the then-fledgling metal band, Nuclear Medicine Conclave. However, after only 8 months of employment, Johnny was fired due to his incessant urge to incite violence at concerts. His tenure, though short, is legendary among the hundreds of thousands of dedicated Nuclear Medicine Conclave fans today.
“Johnny was so fucking metal,” one fan fondly remembers. “Nobody was safe, man. Ushers, photographers…one time a singer for an opening band mispronounced the NMC singer’s name. Johnny went on stage right then and punched the dude in the throat.
“Johnny was a damn good crew member” recalls NMC lead singer Cthulhu Bloodscythe. “He just got a little hard to control. Look, we’re all for body slamming people, but, like, wait until the show starts.”
Getting fired was really hard on Johnny. It was around that time he tried to retroactively drop out of school, but the administration at St. John’s Lutheran High decided his 3.9 GPA and honors graduate standing could not be changed.
Johnny didn’t hold any grudges against the band. Ultimately, he blamed himself for his firing. This only added to his already unstable self image and worldview, meaning he needed Nuclear Medicine Conclave’s music now more than ever. As a result, in 1997 he officially founded the NMC fan club, uniting the band’s loosely-bound yet universally angry fan base.
Johnny Slam served as the fan club’s Grand Demon until his untimely death in 2019. His time as the group’s leader spanned 22 years and 10 Nuclear Medicine Conclave studio albums. Fans of the band revered Johnny, crowdfunding his travel and tickets so he could attend every single NMC show.
On June 6, 2019, Nuclear Medicine Conclave played a sold out show at Chainbreaker’s Concert Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. As the band’s hit song “The Virgin Reaping” faded out, Cthulhu Bloodscythe announced that the band’s “Dark Spawn” world tour would be their last. Other than his high school level studies in microbiology and American literature, Nuclear Medicine Conclave was the only thing that ever brought Johnny Slam joy. Overcome with rage, he began punching the throats of everybody around him. Fellow fans sharing his anger followed suit, creating the largest, most violent mosh pit ever seen at a NMC show.
Johnny Slam died in the pit. As he documented often on the NMC Fans Facebook page, this was the fashion in which he wished to die. Further in accordance with his wishes, his body will be hurled into the sea.
After weeks of silence on the matter of Johnny Slam's death, Nuclear Medicine Conclave announced that their forthcoming synth-pop LP and comeback tour will be named in his honor.
