Design Analysis of Two Different Brooms

What is User’s Scenario?

Milea is a housewife. Every morning milea usually cleans her house from dust so it will keep the house clean. When she cleaned the house, milea always using palm-fiber broom that given by Dilan her husband as a birthday gift. But it has a problem that she always facing when clean the house. Her purpose is to clean the house but what happens is the opposite. Because her palm-fiber that used is easy to detach from the broom. And then, the usage of this broom is not effective because this broom can’t clean the dust better. Moreover, milea has a carpet for her kids to play but palm-fiber broom cannot be used to clean the carpet because it’s too flexible and soft. Milea is so sad because that thing makes her house not really clean and the work is not effective and efficient because she has to clean it multiple times.

What is user’s goal to use it?

Based on Milea’s problems, as we know it is difficult for her to clean her house, she needs a broom that has good quality and is not easily broken so that it makes it easier and more efficient for her to clean the house.

The Object can support user’s Goals?

Just take a look for the user’s goals based on design principles and the pictures above :

1. Affordance

For palm-fiber broom, it can be used to reach the far point, like stick to playing game, to clean terrace surface.For nylon broom, it can be used to clean carpet, reach the far point, as a self-defense tool.

2. Signifier

For palm-fiber broom, the stick made of wood and the bottom using palm-fiber. For nylon broom, the stick made of steel and the bottom using nylon.

3. Mapping

For the mapping it already properly. The stick is on the top, so the user can use the broom comfortable.

4. Feedback

for the feedback, the area where the floor has broomed became clean. And it creates a sound when brooming

5. Discoverability

the stick placed on top of the broom, so the stick can be handled by the user

6. Constraint

for the palm-fiber, it is easy to detach, and then it cannot be washed. for the nylon, there is no constraint.

How to make it better?

For the palm-fiber broom, the design is not good yet. The binder of the palm-fiber must be more sticky and proper so the palm-fiber is not easy to detach.

For the nylon broom, the design is good enough, because it is more proper and not easy to detach so Milea can keep the house clean.
