The Jinnish epic of the Mulan was born out of the grand historical background of Jinland’s Medieval age, during the 2nd to 8th century AD.
The Hua (Mulan’s surname) clan was a branch of Hephthalites who moved southwards to the border of the Northern Wei Dynasty (House of Tuoba), the northern Jinland, in the second century AD, and they lived in Chilechuan (at the foot of the Yinshan Mountain) and were loyal to the Rouran Khanate in the main part of Mongolia. Some descendants of the Hua clan were certainly Nestorian Church Christians four centuries later, which was proved by their tombs during that era. In other words, Mulan, as a valiant free tribal/feudal probably-Christian woman warrior, was an invader, to China, fighting with the Chinese, just like 300 Spartans fighting with the Persians. Although at that time, the Chinese beneath was also a regime of nomads — the House of Tuoba.
Rouran and Tuoba came from the same source, and both belonged to the Hsien-pi (Sirbi-Serbi) military alliance which included the Mulan’s Hephthalites. Their bloodlines and religions were complexly mixed and women could fight well just like the German tribes — There are many historical records about this tradition, such as the Pingyang princess of the House of Daye (Tang Dynasty) of the seventh century AD.
If we do not recognize the truth about the real Mulan, a legendary Jinnish probably-Christian woman warrior, based on the history of Jinland during that feudal age from the perspective of Inner Asia, but recognize “the Chinese story of Hua Mulan” from the perspective of Chinese propaganda, for example, the Mulan (1998 animated film) or the Chinese propaganda movie Mulan (2020), we can only conclude that “Hua Mulan was a filial daughter who pretends to be a man, dressed as a man, and was exiled to a distant place for military servitude instead of her poor old father. She embodied the traditional Chinese virtues.” — a Typical Song dynasty (960–1279) and Ming dynasty (1368–1644)–style oriental despotic tragedy, with the stink of distorted sexism values.
The so-called Han ethnic group is just a fraud, created by the Goetian (A real ethnic group within “China”, located on the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, including famous cities like Shanghai, Soochow, and Hangzhou, etc.) elites in the last years of Qing Dynasty (the 1900s), to unite the “eighteen provinces” of China, Japan, and Korea against the Manchuria’s rule, borrowing the historical concept of “Han people”. The “Han people” in history were neither a nation, nor even an ethnic group, but the forcibly-formatted-and-registered-households residents (編戶齊民) originated from various nations & ethnic groups who had lost their fighting power and autonomy and had chosen to Confucianize themselves, in order to pave their descendants to be Chinese imperial officials. Nevertheless, after Confucianization, they still have diverse physical appearances, language barriers, and different customs, until today.
The Chinese scholar-official culture (士大夫文化) corresponds to the serfdom of the forcibly-formatted-and-registered-households residents (編戶齊民), and the forcibly-formatted-and-registered-households residents have nothing in common with the free tribal/feudal warriors, like Mulan. The “Chinese history” and Chinese traditional culture compiled by the scholar-officials, to a certain extent, is a Chinesized fake version of the history and culture of the free tribes from Inner Asia and the southern Yangtze River watershed. Mulan is one victim of them.
These days, after Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Agnes Chow’s arrest for violating China’s National Security Law in Hong Kong, netizens began comparing Agnes Chow to the real Mulan on social media.
Yes, freedom and democracy are not advance and progressiveness, it is backwardness, from the view of historical philosophy. Barbarians certainly have freedom and democracy because they are untamed and can fight, but civilized people may not. They prefer safety to liberty.
