It All Starts Where Work Routine Ends!

Waking up at 6 a.m, rolling out of bed, automatically heading to the coffee machine to make that refreshing double shot espresso, getting dressed and off the door in almost 40 minutes to work…Twelve hours later, you’re back home, exhausted as usual. You sit on the couch, set your brain to hibernation mode and watch TV or carry out any other activity that doesn’t put those neurons to work.
Sounds familiar?
While timestamps might change from one person to another, the daily work routine remains the same for most.
People tend to believe that their eight hours at work are just enough to put their career dreams into action. Unfortunately, that’s not entirely true.
It is what you do when you get home; these couple of hours before you sleep that will not only define you, but will also set you apart. In the ultra-competitive business world that we live in, any advantage that you can get will grant you some tangible benefits in the workplace. As such, our advice for you is to invest in yourself and in your own self-improvement.
With that being said, what are the most productive things that you can do instead of watching a Turkish series?
1) Read
Grab any book and start reading. Try to set a reading goal for yourself to remain motivated- finishing a book per month for instance. Not into books and looking for smaller reads? How about Quora or Medium?
2) Learn
Seek knowledge in disciplines outside your specialty. Learn about psychology, neuroscience, entrepreneurship or any programming language. As the saying goes, the sky is the limit. So enroll in any course, engage in online communities, attend conferences or sessions, watch Ted talks, etc.…
3) Create Your Own Projects
If you don’t have any specific ideas in mind, then let us introduce you to Kickstarter, your new inspirational best friend. You will be amazed by the number of projects that get funded and the creativity of the people working on them.
Go to Kickstarter and get motivated to pursue your own project that might range from composing new music pieces to creating an online app. And plan to dedicate an hour each day to your project.
4) Build Your Social Network
We encourage you to connect with people. Surround yourself with great minds, smart friends or mentors that will inspire you to grow on the personal and professional levels.
Plan a weekly meeting with your inner circle, but skip the gossip talks and jump into discussing ideas and knowledge.
There is no better way to put it than to quote Eleanor Roosevelt: “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”
5) Volunteer
Looking for a life-changing experience? Volunteer in any community development work be it teaching, raising awareness, or writing proposals.
You will get to know yourself better, explore new career paths and learn about your true passion.
So next time you think of putting your brain on hibernate mode, pause a second and please, don’t.
