Genetically modified food is a food i.e. produced from plants and animals who’s DNA has been altered through genetic engineering. It is the process where manipulations on organisms are carried out directly, if we talk about the origin for production of GMO food it is in the market since 1994.

According to Farouk Abubakar genetically modified organism are used for variety of purposes such as:

· Food Supplies become predictable.

· Nutritional content can be improvised.

· Genetically modified foods can have a longer shelf life.

· GMO crops provide medical benefits.

· Modified foods are easier to transport.

· Pesticide and herbicide are not used often.

Is GM Foods Safe to Eat?

Different GM organism include different genes inserted in different ways so the individual GM foods and their safety should varied from case to so it would be quite inadequate or unfair to make a general statement on safety of all such foods.

GM foods currently available on national as well as international market and every country has their own safety measures to ensure whether the food presented have health risks or not. They are accepted in the market after an authentic approval.

How GM Foods are Regulated Nationally?

Every country has different and specific regulations for GM food. In some countries they are not regulated yet. And most of the countries place their focus on assessment of risks for consumer health. Countries have provisions for GM foods taking in to account health as well as environmental risks.

What Makes GMO’s Debatable?

1) GMO Can Cause Antibiotic Resistance

Concluded in many universities results that when crops get modified at the genetic levels it reduces the effectiveness of medication effects and antibiotics that it contain naturally and are needed in traditional sense and it is believed that they harm consumers.

2) Genes Spread into Different Plants

Crops share filed with another weeds and there are increased chances for genetic migration when genetically modified crops are cultivated. Interaction at cellular levels can create unforeseen complication for future growth of crops. According to Farouk Dozens of weed species are already resistant to Atrazine.

3) Carcinogen Exposure Risk

No-doubt GMO’s are the effective way to boost food production and potential use of pesticides increase the risk of cancer development in rats and bad effects on human health too. There are many countries that has made labeling of GMO food mandatory after all we have right to know what we are eating and how it has been grown.

GMO products are widely in use from last few years because of increased productivity. If you want to know more on the concern feel free to contact Farouk Abubakar made in-depth research in the field.
