The Ever-Evolving Medium

Thanks for the mention, Ernio. It does seem like I’m seeing fewer and fewer of my favorite writers, many of whom you mentioned above, coming through my feed. Medium does feel a little different lately, which I suspect has caused many writers to take a step back and evaluate whether it’s the same place where their work felt at home that it was a few months ago.

That’s the way it’s felt for me recently, at least. Not that I’ve left. I don’t feel the need to just disappear from Medium. But I definitely haven’t been posting as much as I used to. And I haven’t posted a new short story in a couple months, and I don’t have any plans to in the near future. Part of that’s because I’m a bit burnt out from writing so much for free and trying to balance that with my freelancing, which does pay.

Lately, if I’m honest, Medium has felt more like an “us versus them” warzone than a place to freely share idea. Maybe I’m alone in that assessment. I’m no expert on cultural observation. It’s just the way things have looked to me. It’s probably a reflection of the wider culture, which is increasingly divided on a number of issues.

I miss the way Medium used to feel as well.
