The Academy Awards 2021 ceremony was held on April 25. For me, the nominees for “Best Costume Design” were especially interesting.

“Emma.” — costume designer Alexandra Byrne
The motion picture is a major contender for the award. It has been noted by the major fashion tabloids, and Anna Wintour herself hosted a special screening of the adaptation. One of the main tools of expression in the film is the color scheme of the costumes and interiors.
“As an artist, I believe that color is one of the strongest tools of design. Through it you can reveal the idea of the film and give the audience clues,” says Alexandra.

“Munk” costume designer Trish Summerville
Black and white film is a rarity these days! Designing costumes that would look great even while being colorless was a challenge Trish faced. The costumer drew on images of real people who had become prototypes of the characters by researching their archival photographs from the Hollywood days of the 1930s.

“Ma Rainey: Mother of the Blues” — Costume Designer Ann Rott
In the film, which tells the story of the life of blues singer Ma Rainey, the costume designer is the eminent 89-year-old Ann Rott. The outfits again authentically immerse us in the era, this time it’s 1920s America. The spirit of the colorful shows is conveyed in the glitter and color of the fabrics. The style of the main character is lavish — she is wearing embroidered brocade dresses and fur mantos.

“Mulan” — Costume Designer Sabine Daigeler
In the remake of the cartoon of the same name, the clothes clearly showcase Chinese culture. Among more than a thousand painstakingly designed costumes, we see traditional outfits as well as military uniforms.

“Pinocchio” — costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini
The designer had the task of conveying with the costumes an atmosphere of hopeless poverty. To do this, the team used deliberate aging of fabrics, adding scuffs and texture.
“We’re not creating beauty, but the right costume for the character,” Massimo says.

Friends, which film do you think is worthy of a major award?
