How Much Fashion Do You Need In Your Life?
You don’t have to work in fashion to want to look good, but how much time do you actually spend on fashion?

As somebody who works in fashion I often get asked things like ‘what’s cool now?’ or ‘what are the latest trends?’ but it seems to me that this interest on the part of people from outside the fashion industry doesn’t go far beyond casual conversation.
It’s true that everybody starts their day by deciding what to wear, and we all have to go shopping from time to time, but it not as important to most people as the fashion industry would have us believe.
Fashion is more visible than ever now with live broadcasts from fashion shows getting millions of views from all over the world when they used to be limited to fashion buyers and press. Social media is flooded with fashion bloggers of all shapes and sizes and you would have to spend all day scrolling through your newsfeed to keep track of all of their updates with all the branded content they advertise. Of course, that’s part of many fashion jobs, but if you don’t work in the industry how many of them would you follow?
Most people I know would leaf through a fashion magazine while they’re having their hair done or spend an hour online looking for something specific, like a dress for a special occasion, but there just seems to be too much fashion information for people with other interests and priorities in their life to give it the time of day.
Unless, of course, you’ve decided that you need to update your look… and that’s when I’m usually asked those questions, because with so much fashion advice out there people just don’t seem to know where to look!
Most people who work in fashion love it, in fact, you wouldn’t last long in the industry if you don’t. Most fashion people also don’t spend a lot of time shopping because thanks to their job they know exactly what to buy and where to find it, and usually with a discount.
But if you’re not privy to this inside information, how much time would you spend looking for ‘what’s cool’? It doesn’t appear to be very much, or is it just my biased fashion-insider view?
