Lauren talks about her experiences on the Fast Stream
We’re running a blog series where current Fast Streamers will talk about their insights and experience on the Fast Stream. Today, Lauren tells us about her experiences.
Hello! I’m on the Generalist Fast Stream and currently in my second year. I’ve previously been in the Department of Health in Leeds where I worked on integrated healthcare policy, and the Department of Energy and Climate Change where I worked on EU energy policy. I’m currently on secondment to a charity, Movement to Work, which works with the UK’s leading employers to help young people to get into work.
I’ve loved my time on the Fast Stream and the exciting challenges it has offered me. I’ve briefed Ministers and senior civil servants, including the Prime Minister and CEOs, attended technical working groups in Brussels, and undertaken European policy training in the Netherlands. I have worked as a Desk Officer for five European countries (leading on engagement strategies, briefing and being the point of contact for engagement with our embassies), hosted overseas delegations and organised events. I’ve also made a real policy impact — from working on the Department of Health’s housing and health strategy to energy and climate policy. The opportunity to go on secondment is great, it allows Fast Streamers to broaden their experiences and develop skills that will have a lasting impact on the Civil Service.
Sure, this all sounds like challenging work — and it has been — but the Fast Stream offers a fantastic support network that will help you to disseminate what went well, what you could do better, and what your future career could look like. You’ll start your journey with an induction week which provides a fantastic opportunity to get to know others in your cohort and get a ‘feel’ for what it’s like to be a civil servant. On top of that, there’s a great support network from your line manager and a specified ‘cohort leader’ who will help you from everything from HR queries to supporting your development.
I would strongly encourage you all to apply, whatever your interests there’s something for you in the Civil Service — the Fast Stream alone has 15 different programmes on offer from HR to digital.
Applications are open now, so head to faststream.gov.uk to find out more.
