5 Things You Need to Know Before Starting an Internship

Orig. Published 9/21/2014

Hey Loves,

Those who follow me across social networks know that I’ve been participating in a very exciting internship! “Internship?!?! but didn’t you already graduate form college. Shouldn’t you have a full-time job?” Patience, my loves. There are things in the works. At this stage in my pre-professional career, I am very grateful for every opportunity to learn and sharpen my skills. This way when I do land my first big job I will be prepared. Speaking of preparation, I recently had a very interesting conversation with a longtime friend. Last year her foray into post-grad life was shaky. Eventually she ended up landing a fall internship with a major theater in a large city. As someone who was, and still is, interested in working in the arts it was a golden opportunity to start her career in the sector. Unfortunately, at the end of her time with the organization she ended up not getting the offer. After speaking with her about her experience, I realized that like many of us she was not thoroughly prepared going into the situation. No one had explained the very basics of what internships were all about. As I find myself in a similar position, I share with you a few things I’ve learn along the way before starting any internship:

  1. This is a [insert number] month long interview for you and for the company
  2. Cultural fit is great, but so is quality of work
  3. Network
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, but also don’t shy away from seeking out your own answers
  5. Think about what you want to achieve

And don’t forget to have fun! This is a great opportunity for you to learn about your interests and expertise. So, go get ‘em!
