Attitude: Kanye

Orig. Published 2/15/2015

I have an associate who considers himself to be perfect. In fact, if you ask him what he thinks of himself he will readily tell you just that. Sure, that makes him seem like a pompous jerk, but I applaud his confidence. In his mind, he is perfect just as he is. Some may see this as arrogance, others who are familiar with the many rants of Kanye West will probably recognize this as Kanyefidence. Personally, I see this as the purest form of self-acceptance and self-actualization.

Sure, we all make fun of Kanye West, but you have to admit that his confidence is unparalleled. In fact, I think we can all take notes from people like him and my associate. Dare I say it, but they have the balls to love themselves freely and without abandon in a society that constantly tells us that we need to change — that we are incomplete and deeply imperfect human beings. Our society tells us if we buy more, think less, have this and lose that, we will be perfect enough or deserving enough of love, happiness and success. It’s a vicious cycle and people like Kanye have broken the mold.

I want to help you break that mold too. There is a lot of power in not caring about people’s opinions of you. Your confidence is one of your best assets. It is something you must master in order to achieve great things. Think about the people who have dared to shape this century. They are people of vision. They did not follow any prescribed mold. They created their own. I am not saying this is an easy task. It takes practice, everyday — all day, but once you have mastered being unapologetically you there is nothing stopping you.

For now, I hope that this simple regimen helps you begin to think a little more like Kanye:

  1. Look in the mirror
  2. Recite one of these awesome quotes from Mr. West:

“They say your attitude determines your latitude. I’m high as a motherf*cker, fly as a motherf*cker…”

“Everything I’m not made me everything I am.”

“You can’t marginalize me. You can’t tell me what creativity I’m supposed to do on this earth…I believe in me.”

“I’m on the pursuit of awesomeness. Excellence is the bare minimum.”

“People liking me or me liking myself? I chose the latter.”

“Believe in your flyness, conquer your shyness.”

Always remember to love yourself as much as Kanye loves Kanye.
