I was baptized 24 years ago today.

I remember wanting to be baptized because my friend Noah was baptized and when it happened to him-his family came together and ate together.

A family. A meal.

If the holy waters could give me a family and a meal I was in. My family was going through difficult times with my dad and I just wanted everyone to eat together at a table.

I waded into the waters and was incorporated and initiated into the New Creation by, full immersion, mind you.

My family ate at a greasy spoon after church…but nothing magically changed.

Little did I know that at baptism the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit had given me a family called the Church.

Little did I know that at baptism the Living God had given me an everlasting meal called the Eucharist.

Today I remember my baptism and I am grateful.

Baptism is God’s most beautiful and magnificent gift…We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty; Baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates light; garment since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God’s Lordship. — St. Gregory of Nazianzus Oration XI “On Holy Baptism”
