Nutrition is a process in which an organism takes a healthy and balanced diet (which contains nutrients), and the utilization of nutrients from the food. The body converts the nutrients into energy, which is used by body for the nourishment.

NUTRIENTS
They are the essential substances that our body needs to function properly in order to maintain good health. They are significant for the proper functioning of the body and the survival of human beings.
A person’s well-being depends on a balanced diet that contains nutrients.

ROLE OF NUTRIENTS
NUTRIENTS play a significant role in our body. Nutrients help in the repair and growth of our body. Our body needs every nutrient that we take from different kinds of food that plays a significant role in our well-being.

Have you ever wondered how your body works properly every function completely are done in a positive manner from which you get the strength to work. The reason behind the functioning of every function is nutrients.

Just like the food is not cooked without fire your body will not work properly without nutrients.

The nutrients used by humans are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, minerals, vitamins, etc.

CARBOHYDRATES

They are the common and most important source of energy. They contain 4 kilocalories per gram. Glucose is the most useful carbohydrate. They are called carbohydrates because they are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The brain’s most preferred source of energy is also carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates can be simple carbs and complex carbs.
Simple Carbs are a quick source of energy that digests earlier. They are present in fruits, milk products, etc.
Complex carbs digest slowly and are the most stable source of energy. They are present in whole grains, vegetables, etc.

Sources Of Carbohydrates
Following are some sources of carbohydrates

  • Pastas
  • Beans
  • Potatoes
  • Bread
  • Bran Rice
  • Cereals

LIPIDS
The compounds which are formed of fatty acids and are insoluble in water are called lipids. Lipids are an extremely good source of energy. The energy content of lipids (fats) is approximately 9 kilocalories per gram.

Sources of lipids
Important sources of lipids include

  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Fish
  • Butter
  • Mustard seeds
  • Coconut
  • Dry fruit
  • Egg

PROTEINS

Proteins are one of the sources of energy composed of amino acids. Proteins also play a role as the significant component of muscles, ligaments(strong and flexible bands of connective tissue that join one bone to another at joints), and tendons(tough bands that attach muscles to bones). They are the source of growth in a human.

One gram of protein provides about 4 kcal of energy. They also play a role in enzymes(globular proteins that act as catalysts that speed up the chemical reaction and help in metabolism). They are also the major component of membranes and other organelles of your cells.
Sources of proteins

Important sources of proteins include

  • Meat
  • Eggs
  • Grains
  • Dairy Products ( milk and cheese)
  • Legumes( beans, peas)

MINERALS

Minerals are organic elements that are essential for the human body to maintain good health but cannot be synthesized in the body. Minerals are categorized into major minerals and trace minerals.

Major Minerals
They are required in 100mg or more per day.
Examples are

  • sodium
  • chloride
  • calcium etc.

Trace minerals
They are required in amounts less than 100 mg per day.
Examples are

  • iron
  • copper
  • iodine etc

VITAMINS

They are the elements that are required in normal growth and metabolism. They are essential nutrients but are required in low amounts. They have various functions including making bones stronger, wound healing, helping in fighting against infection, etc. Vitamins are divided into two groups.
1. Fat-soluble vitamins ( Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K).
2. Water-soluble vitamins (Vitamin B and Vitamin C).

CONCLUSION
To adopt a healthy lifestyle and maintain good health you need to take a balanced diet that contains all kinds of nutrients i.e. carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, minerals, and vitamins.
