My First Priceless Learning in XLFL Workshop
My Reflective Writing
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh….
First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Fatur Rohim, a third-year undergraduate chemistry student at University of Lampung. I am one of the awardee of the XLFL B10 family. Together with my cohort friends (Jakarta 2) and cohort Jakarta 1, we have completed the priceless first workshop (05–06 February 2022) with our amazing facilitator (Rizki Oceano). I am very grateful to Rizki as our facilitator for giving us many valuable lessons that we could take.
When attending this workshop, I was nervous and nervous because this was the first time I participated in XLFL workshop activities. I learned many things from this workshop, but I won’t discuss all of them in this article. I realize the importance of effective communication because with effective communication, the message that we want to deliver could be received and well understood, especially for me as a scientist. After watching the film Don’t Look Up, I realized that as scientists, we should be able to communicate effectively because if we convey a fact to the public that we get based on the results of experiments or observations, we should be aware that the message we give won’t be conveyed or appropriately received if we use scientific languages that are only known by our community (academics, researchers, etc.), so we need effective communication to make the public understands what we are conveying because effective communication is not only about ensuring that our message is delivered, but about the use of words, tone, expression, so that the message conveyed could be well understood.
We had a lot of discussions during the workshop. I got a lot of new insights and knowledge related to several things. I am very interested in research, especially scientific research. My future aspiration is to become a researcher, especially in chemistry (organic chemistry). To become a researcher I must have competency not only knowledge, because if only my knowledge I just “Know-What” but by having competency I will “Know-How” and we need to remember that competency won’t be effective without the emotional intelligence (EI), because being a researcher we work not only as individuals but work in groups so we can understand and put well ourselves by understanding our emotions and those around us.
Being a researcher requires us to be sensitive to current issues and changes to create beneficial innovations for the public. Through a discussion on change management by Dr. Kotter, then using the thinking tools KWL and SCAMPER, I realized that this could be collaborated in planning an innovation. Change management has eight stages and is divided into three important points (Creating the climate change, engaging & enabling the organization, and implementing & sustaining for change), in research we must know the urgency of the research we are doing until later its application in everyday life, change management by Dr. Kotter can be used as a framework for creating innovation and change.
Thinking tools KWL and SCAMPER will help develop innovative ideas from previous studies. There is so much research in chemistry already done, so it isn’t easy to create something new. What we could do now is to innovate from previous studies that still could continue to be developed. The KWL thinking tool helps us know what we already know, what we want to know, and what we have learned from previous studies. Then the SCAMPER thinking tool can help us develop products because sometimes it is difficult for us to get ideas when trying to develop products. I think SCAMPER will be helpful in developing research ideas because it is easy to use. As researchers, we must always be confident in our research, whatever the results. My lecturer once told me that we must be confident in our research because it is our hard work. There is also something to remember: confidence is built in the momentum, not instant.
I have been through the first workshop for two days and there are many things that I could learn (one in one package). Once again, I would like to thank Rizki as our excellent facilitator and my lovely cohort friends, also I apologize for everything. I can’t wait for the next journey!!!
Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh….
Have a great day!!
