Title: Interesting combination of airport vocabulary and lessons about being different and not giving up
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2020
Review: Max, the Airplane that Couldnā€™t Fly
Nice childrenā€™s book with good illustrations and a unique combination of teaching children about airports while teaching them a lesson about pushing through adversity.

What I liked:
-The illustrations were nice ā€” kind of reminded me of the old Saturday Morning Cartoons in the airplanesā€™ facial expressions.
-Infotaining way of teaching airport vocabulary, explaining what airports contain, and showing a little bit how it works.
-The accurate depiction of a plane rolling over on its side with imbalanced wings was a nice, accurate touch.
-The depiction of the others teasing Max is realistic (I know from experience).
-I liked showing both sides of the fixed wing: the self-consciousness side and then the ā€œThis thing makes me awesome!ā€ side when you change your perspective. Really nice combination for children to learn while keeping the teaching there implicit.
-Celebrating the success with his parents was nice.

Nitpicks:
-I think that a kid might conflate the cockpit with the nose of the plane. Landing gear and lawn mower text could be a tad closer to what they reference but should be okay for most people. Fireman text might be better under the fireman so itā€™s not confused with the fire hose. Airport cleaner text probably better next to the mouse vs. his cart.
-The Mom airplaneā€™s mouth when sheā€™s facing the marshaller looks slightly off (i.e., should only be able to see about half her upper lip vs. 70% of it, creating a slight optical illusion as if itā€™s facing down-right).
-Technically, the green bin is for recycling, not trash.
-Iā€™m not sure if a child will be able to differentiate between the educational content thatā€™s real/true and the fictional stuff like the monkeys and giraffes working at the airport. Iā€™m sure thatā€™s not a big issue, but I found that its explanations of the workers in very educational terms (e.g., ā€œThere areā€¦loaders, cleaners, caterersā€¦ā€) were intermixed with fantasy-that-kids-might-believe ideas (e.g., ā€œThe monkeys drive the luggage carsā€¦ā€).
-Technically, passengers check in bags because itā€™s more efficient for the airlines to load, not (just) because the passengers donā€™t want to carry them. Also, the way itā€™s worded might confuse a child into thinking that the bags are transported separately (ā€œdonā€™t want to carry in usā€ meaning they give them to someone else to take separately).
-I think there should be a runway under/before the green plane on the ā€œFinally, Max saw an airplane take off to the skyā€ page since he saw another plane flying on the previous page and the text is saying heā€™s finally seeing a takeoff for the first time.
-I thought it was weird to use technical terms throughout the book and then use ā€œdoctor for airplanesā€ later. Maybe, ā€œAn engineer is like a doctor for airplanes,ā€ wouldā€™ve made more sense to me.
-Not sure if the other planes teasing him one second and then ā€œall the other airplanes were happy for Maxā€ expresses the nuance that those are probably different children (supporters vs. detractors; friends vs. peers).

Other Thoughts/Notes:
-Authorā€™s note: in the SUMMARY, it should be, ā€œDad Airplane takes Max on a tour of the airport and teachesā€ instead of ā€œteachā€; Kindle title is ā€œMax, the Airplane that Couldnā€™t Flyā€ while the copyright page has in parentheses, ā€œ(Max the Airplane that Couldnā€™t Fly)ā€; in the ebook version (where you can only see one page at a time), thereā€™s no sign of Max on the page where heā€™s introduced (heā€™s on the next page, which makes perfect sense in the print version but I was wondering whether a child would understand where Max was if looking on an iPad); ā€œpassengers hand over the baggage that they donā€™t want to carry in us, to the check-in deskā€ might just be better written as, ā€œpassengers hand over heavy baggage to the Check-in deskā€ to avoid the comma thatā€™s grammatically incorrect but used so people donā€™t read it as, ā€œto carry in us to the Check-in desk.ā€
-This has a lot of good mental amusements for adults. I kept thinking that the terminal looked like a zoo/museum or a mini-mall. For a second, I thought the planes were in the terminal, which made me imagine the passengers screaming, ā€œOh, my God! There are planes in the terminal!!!ā€ I also kept imagining the Dad plane saying funny things like, ā€œThis is where people pay for food and goods at a 25% premium because theyā€™re a captive audience.ā€ (Hehe)
-I thought the mustache of the airplane with the winter hat was sleeping eyes for a minute.

Title: Recommend for the First Vacation Flight of a Curious Kid!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2020
Review: Max, the Airplane that Couldnā€™t Fly is a great book in two ways; education of how an airport works, and not giving up on your dreams despite physical challenges. It gets high marks from me!

As an airport firefighter, I appreciated how the book told the story of what goes on at an airport. All the basics were covered.

As a father, I loved the lessons of perseverance; hope undeterred by circumstances.

The illustrations are colorful, inspiring, and innocent. A young child could easily translate the concepts of the book while strolling through a real-life airport.

Iā€™d recommend Max, the Airplane that Couldnā€™t Fly to parents with young kids; particularly those going on vacation!

Title: Overcoming Obstacles
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2020
Review: Max the Airplane that Couldnā€™t Fly is a very detail-oriented book. Parents and airplane enthusiasts may appreciate the manner in which airplane terms are labeled especially as they read to children. I can envision readers pointing to certain elements related to flying, providing children with opportunities to learn, while being entertained. In addition, the cute little animals and the roles they have at the airport make the learning fun. More importantly, Max the Airplane that Couldnā€™t Fly leaves readers with a message on the importance of sincere effort and its impact on overcoming obstacles.

Title: inaccurate- donā€™t teach your kids this

Review: Where is the editor?!?! The terms are incorrect, & the writing is really horrible. No flow to it at all. We have a pilot and a flight attendant in our family and both were aghast with the errors in this book. Not a good kids book. It is actually quite hilarious as far as the Boeing Max not flying. Just sayin.

Title: Airports, one of the unappreciated favorite places of kids
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2020
Review: One of my favorite places growing up was the airport. I really think kids enjoy airports more than people realize. LEGO realizes this and has a history of airport LEGO sets. This book reminded me of what a wonderful place an airport was to a small child, and I suspect young kids will appreciate it as well.

Title: Terrible Writing
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2020
Review: This book is terribly written and the airport terminology is incorrect. Itā€™s as if there was no editor for the writing. The storyline is fine, but for a child who loves airplanes, there are much better titles out there.
