Making a Stand

It’s been a decade since death penalty was abolished by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The execution chamber used for death penalty lies silently in the museum inside the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa. Our president today, Rodrigo “Rody” Roa Duterte also known as Digong, might bring back the death penalty specifically executing criminals by hanging. Our president is well known by his fight against criminality and wants to enforce 50 death penalties per month. Nevertheless, is execution the only solution? will it make our country prosperous? or just make the value of life diminish?

All the way back at Duterte’s campaign, he gave voice to the anger of those victims and ordinary people who are already fed-up in criminality. But does death penalty could actually reduce crime if those authoritative person are the one who are doing it and because that they have the authority means that they cannot be arrested?

According to the President of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption Dante Jimenez, they believe that death penalty can make the criminals feel fear of doing crime but it is contrary of what’s happening today. The citizens are afraid of the criminal.

Criminality has been ceaseless in our country and the people are fed-up of waiting for the solution. I think that it is right to bring back death penalty because no one will get killed if no one commits crime. This means that if they commit crime, they chose to end their life, their punishment.

Ritz Lee Santos III — a member of a human rights organization Amnesty International — stated that before we can have death penalty, we need to fix our legal process, our legal system because the people knows how to escape and how to skirt the law. So if we don’t give a sample to the criminals, it would continue.

It is true, how can we have death penalty if the citizens knows how to escape. We should give a sample to the criminals so that they would feel fear and can make them stop to act illegally.

As a roman catholic, The 7th commandment of God “Thou shalt not kill”. It is hard to the offender, what if they regret doing their crime? What if they wanted to change? Also being a victim is surely hard, it would take a long time to carry on and forgive. Just like actress Cherry Pie Picache, despite of what happened to her, she’s still not in favor of death penalty.

Back in 2004, the Supreme Court admitted that in 7 out of 10 cases of death penalty was a mistake or Judicial Error. It means that those lives were taken because of an error or maybe because of bribing. It is truly unjust.

It is also said that most of the people who has been sentenced to death penalty are poor it is according to Free Legal Assistance Group. There were also innocent people who are accused to an illegal act. How about them?
