Apple introduced 12 inch MacBook back in 2015. I would not say it has revolutionary changes or features, but one change was surprised many people. Apple removed one of the iconic things a “glowing Apple logo” on the back panel and replaced it with a stainless steel Apple logo which is bonded to the aluminum through a cutout. In this story, I am going to explain why Apple actually removed an iconic glowing Apple logo from MacBook.

Well, 12 inch MacBook was significantly thinner than previous models of MacBook. But thin design caused some challenges for Apple, and the company was forced to change other parts of the product. For example, they introduced a new type of keyboard design which is called “ the Butterfly mechanism”. It was designed for thinner MacBooks and it was much softer than the previous design “Scissors keyboard”.

So, changing a “glowing Apple” logo was also part of the challenge that Apple faced. The reason for that was new Retina display was not capable to provide enough backlighting to make the logo glow. Although, previously brightness of the glowing logo was controlled by the brightness of the screen. The glowing Apple logo was transparent which means if there is enough strong light (sunlight, flash) behind the panel, the light might enter through the logo and affect the quality and color inaccuracy of the display since 12 inch MacBook’s panel is so thin. So this is the main reason why Apple removed the glowing Apple logo from the newly released MacBook back in 2015 and since then the company started using the stainless steel logo for its all MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models.

Steve Jobs used this glowing Apple logo for the purpose of branding. Whenever people see the glowing logo they notice, they recognize it even from a long distance, they remember it easily. However, nowadays Apple has changed the way it approaches branding. They do not want people to recognize them for bitten apple logo, but for the uniqueness of the design of their products. If you focus on the design of products, you might notice that it's easily recognizable, like you don’t need to see the logo to know if the product is from Apple.
