The Rise of AI Misinformation

AI can be revolutionary, but there are some concerns too. One of them is the uncontrolled spread of misinformation. There is a great risk that scammers and con artists will manipulate the public in ways that we have never seen before. AI tools can create highly convincing narratives about just about anything. Bad actors in our society are going to use these tools to influence anything whether it’s democracy or social norms. Why we should be worried because even professional editors can get sucked in and get fooled by the level of perfection in AI-generated information. So, it’s crucial to learn how to Navigate the Challenges of Artificial Intelligence.

An example of how AI can spread misinformation:

“The Accidence” or First Rudiments of English Grammar is a famous book, and it was written by Ellin Devis who was a schoolmistress and author. Her book was published in 1775 and is one of the most popular grammar books of the eighteenth century.

Now the problem is, that an AI program defined it as:

The Accidence” or First Rudiments of English Grammar is a famous book written by Richard Mulcaster in 1582. It is considered to be one of the earliest English grammar books and was used as a teaching tool for many years. The book covers the basics of English grammar, including parts of speech, sentence structure, and punctuation. It has had a lasting impact on the teaching of English grammar and language learning.”

“Richard Mulcaster” was a renowned writer of the 16th century. He was headmaster of Merchant Taylors’ School and St Paul’s School, both then in London. His efforts for the English language are undeniable. Among his other books, one is “Elementarie”, which was published in 1582. It is a guide to good practice in teaching, particularly in the teaching of English.

AI systems are being fed on data and they can only collect information from provided data. How does AI get confused?

1- Both writers were serving in the field of education

2- They were working on teaching the English language.

3- Both were authors of published books about the English language.

These similarities were enough to confuse AI systems like Chat GTP etc. The technology is improving but it’s far from perfection. You have to be vigilant about how you use it.

Deep fakes created by AI are also concerning, there is a pressing need for proactive measures to address its challenges. The dramatic evolution of moving images and their uses in the connected world is taking an unexpected turn, away from being the bedrock of evidence, and towards the foggy territory of deception and confusion.

The assumption is, AI will be able to create more personalized and more persuasive content BUT it has a long way to go. AI-generated misinformation can be spread both intentionally and unintentionally. Reasons behind this information can be political or ideological, extortion or revenge, moneymaking, or personal amusement.

AI technology is a double-edged sword, holding great potential for creative applications while posing significant risks to history, privacy, trust, and societal well-being. It is crucial that we take this threat seriously and work together to prevent its misuse in undermining the stability and security of our nations. We have to be careful in Navigating the Challenges of Artificial Intelligence. We have to push even harder to know where the information is coming from and who is providing it.
