Characteristics of Digital Things

Speaker: Beatriz Arnillas from the Houston Independent Schools District.

This is about a taxonomy to describe digital apps characteristics. This talk will show a draft of a taxonomy called the Characteristics of Digital Curriculum material.

We are guilty of spending money on the solutions we are looking for without at times putting in the planning time needed. The company, itslearning, created a product with the Learning Counsel.

They produced a list of digital characteristics SAMR model? (based on the SAMR Model)

http://www.schrockguide.net/samr.html

The model works from a passive, traditional approach to an active, learner centred approach.

Document called the 71 characteristics of digital curriculum.

They divided the characteristics into categories:

Actions
Design
Controls
Individualisation
Instructions
Mechanisms
Business Model
Hostile Characteristics

These characteristics can be used to determine the suitability of any app that is to be used for educational purposes. It looks at Web Apps and their Data Privacy, Security and internet Safety Ratings.

They produced a way to assess the privacy, security and safety of apps, the link is here and you can hover over the apps to view the various assessment results.

They also produced a Safety, Privacy, Security Rubric.

This is a very good resource for schools when choosing apps to place on student devices.
