The “gig economy” is just a fancy name for piecework… Nineteenth century wine in a twenty-first century bottle. “Gig” gives piecework the ring of cool and hip instead of insecure and precarious.

I rode in an Uber for the first time a few days ago. My teenage son booked it. The driver complained there were too many Uber cars on the road so he was not making much money… That’s the Uber model for you. Take a cut of a contractor’s work with minimal exposure to the downside of over supply. They don’t care if there are too many drivers… They are selling a fantasy and competing unfairly. New dreamers will replace those that give up. I took a regular cab home…

Regular cabs have their flaws to be sure but the flaws are mostly due to government regulation. As things stand, Uber is unfair competition and should be banned. Alternatively regular cabs should be de-regulated and “Uber-fied”. One way or the other, the playing field needs levelling…
