How do two successful and famous actors try and start earning the trust of a relatively small community thousands of transatlantic miles away before they’ve even managed to have an audience with them?
Well, by the sway and swoon of social media of course.
Ever since it was announced Ryan and Rob (no surnames necessary) had formally confirmed their interest in purchasing Wrexham AFC the townsfolk have been reduced to gibbering, disbelieving, fawning wrecks. Me included.
All the main questions remain unanswered — why Wrexham? What is the plan? What is your vision? Will you give the WST an exclusive buy -back opinion in the event you wish to end your ownership? Will you do fries for a dollar (chips for a quid to me and you)?
We’re all naturally curious as to what is going to happen next. All signs point to it being a case of when, not if the takeover will go ahead.
Support for the pair is growing by the day, helped not least by their willingness to show they have firmly pinned their colours to the CPD Wrecsam mast without even setting foot in LL11 yet.
They could have stayed silent. But such a stance can breed cynicism and suspicion.
Given the extremely high profile nature of the pair it would have been a massive own goal to show themselves only to immediately retreat into the shadows until further notice.
Thus began a charm offensive.
Ryan and Rob both tuned into the live stream of the opening day win over Boreham Wood.
Ryan posted a pic to his Instagram story whilst Rob took to Twitter to show how to perfectly balance a laptop on your hand.
IASIP star Rob used both platforms to confirm his viewing of the Solihull game and continued to engage with fans thereafter.
He encouraged his followers, by virtue of ironic wit to get involved with the heartbreak of ‘European football’ — I’m just going to assume he is aware of Wrexham’s pedigree in the Cup Winner’s Cup here — with him saying the sorrow we experience is comparable to those who follow gridiron.
Former Wrexham media teamer Rich Fay replied to his tweet, insisting the toil and trouble only deepens when it comes to supporting the Reds.
Rob was having none of that. A succinct ‘maybe not' tweet back sent us into a frenzy again, as in ‘maybe not because we’re gonna ensure the club is successful going forward, whatever it takes, however much it costs’. Extra points for the baner Cymru alongside the Stars & Stripes and the Maple Leaf of Reynold’s birthplace, Canada.
Whilst it’s been all sweet nothings from Rob via social media, there’s been sweet FA from Ryan about the club since last Saturday’s Instagram screengrab.
Nothing needs to be looked into that. He’s a very busy guy and no doubt he will be well aware his mate Rob has been holding it down pretty well, keeping us all on strings for the both of them.
They are self-aware about what to say and what not to say too. They’ve not uttered the dreaded ‘soccer’ word and don’t imagine they will. They’ve done their research, whether that be with or without advisors, and they are already doing a good job of making us feel like we’re accepting of them as ‘one of us' at such a premature stage.
Hell, they’ve even managed to make us forget that our captain is facing a few months on the sidelines following an operation to rectify a toe problem.
Shaun Pearson? Out for how long?? Exactly. But he’ll be back around Christmas time and will be ready to reclaim the armband from Jay Harris.
Rob was back at it again today as we downed Yeovil Town at the fourth time of asking. He was delighted with the only goal of the game.
And whilst one can only assume Ryan was informed of the result it was a fellow famous Canadian who declared his new love for Wrexham AFC.
Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield showed off his home replica shirt and matching mask, much to the delight of bemused Reds fans.
But if he’s happy telling his 2.3 million Twitter followers about us then who are we to complain?
This is a man who has commanded the International Space Station and was the first Canadian to walk in space.
Forbes magazine described him as "perhaps the most social media savvy astronaut ever to leave Earth".
Another high profile person and influencer using social media to help further the Reds cause. Cosmic.
