A nice take on the subject, specially when refering to the metaphors we go by. There’s already some of this happening through the voice of UX Designers collaborating with the software engineering field. Clearly it’s not the same as having a female sotware engineering voice, but they do participate in shaping products being built nowadays. However, notice that having their voices coming from the Software Engineering field would help us evolve the tools needed to create these products. And through these evolved tools we might enable ourselves to create even better, more innovative products.
On the “10 reasons why more women should work in software engineering”, I feel these points don’t add much to the conversation. Most of them highlight why Software Engineering is an appealing field to be in, no matter the gender. Hence, I would re-title the list as “10 reasons woman should look into working in software engineering”.
To wrap things up, I do agree in that there’s a need to even the ratio. As a society we should probably start by improving the percentage of college female graduates from STEM courses. I feel that parents from “this generarion” are doing their part by having their children break out of some gender roles that have been in place for years. As an example, having a girl child and gifting her a Lego set for her 5th birthday instead of a Barby doll. Family values and education are key in shaping up their future.
