Defining What You Need for a Website (By Comparing it to Real Estate)
Excavating is an Art — Simcoe Needs More Artists

How Local Contractors Work — Or Don’t?

There was a time when local contractors in the Simcoe, Ontario area would appear to tackle all jobs in-house. Meaning they’d have their own guys on staff to do all the dirty jobs... I mean, I THOUGHT that is how it worked.

I never knew about the world of sub contracting, rental machinery etc etc. As I grew up, drips of this old reality started to become apparent, as home builders would complain about difficulty with sub contractor A, while being very happy with sub contractor B. It perked up my ears at first, then I started to pay closer attention to what was going on in the construction industry a little more.

Outside Looking In

As you can see, it’s often very hard to see from the outside, what’s going on on the inside.

Let’s take a job like building a custom home for example. In Simcoe, Ontario and Norfolk County, there’s only so many companies involved in the custom home building process. Each of these companies do not necessarily hire and employ a sole individual or team of workers just for tasks like digging a foundation, or excavating for water mains or utility installations. Even something seemingly as simple as clearing brush and debris from a fresh lot.

It’s not that they couldn’t hire an excavator driver, it’s that there’s not quite enough volume to hire in house.

Small Town Woes — Contractor Problems

It’s the combination of smaller markets and medium sized volumes (exactly like Simcoe, Ontario) that lead to the perfect breeding ground for sub contracting companies that specialize in the services required by all of the home builders. Excavator or backhoe rentals for example, as well as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, dry wallers etc…

Let’s take a closer look at the diggers. You might say ‘Let’s dig deeper’

Excavating and Dump Truck Rentals

Morris Trucking and Excavating is a a prime example of a Simcoe, Ontario based excavating equipment rental company that can be called on as a sub contractor to partner up with construction firms and home builders.

This means that they are handy for any of those projects that require digging, excavating, dirt removal, or junk removal where otherwise an on-hand staff member is not on the payroll. It just wouldn’t make sense for the non-consistent nature of the job.

Dump Truck Rentals

It’s the same way for dump trucks. If you need a dump truck to come to your home or job site just for excess fill removal, or even junk removal, it certainly makes sense to hire out the job to a local professional who already owns the equipment.

If everyone had to buy their own dump truck, what an interesting world we’d be living in today.

Small Scale Rentals

It’s interesting to consider the sharing economy that was once talked about so much in the tech world. “Everyone will share everything” to some degree they’d say.

For instance a power drill: How often do you actually use a power drill? Yet every house has one. They are mass produced in effort to make the prices low that everyone will want one for their own tool box. All the while, the power drill will sit idle for a majority of it’s life.

Capital Expense: Making Dollars into Sense

With larger capital expenditures like heavy machinery (back hoes, front end loaders, dump trucks and excavators) you can see why the ‘sharing economy’ works on a larger scale. It translates to massive savings for companies that aren’t doing digging day in and day out.

Conversely it gives opportunity to a select company or companies in a given market, for instance Simcoe, to take the plunge (or investment). They may purchase the equipment and make money by renting it out, along with qualified operators to companies that seek temporary usage.

About Morris Trucking and Excavating

The company was founded in the early 1970’s and has had a successful track record of serving clients private, industrial, and public, while growing in size to have a sizeable yard in Simcoe.

They now have a wide selection of equipment that will suit a great many digging jobs in a variety of terrains. Spatial constraints are now even less of an issue, as there are mini bobcats with attachments to get into those tighter areas.

Who They Help

Currently, this Simcoe based excavating company is proud to help Norfolk County on various municipal projects. Also, you can see their work with the local home builder, Herrewynen Custom Homes. With Herrewynen, Morris has been often sub contracted to dig the foundations for new homes, as well as level the new lots, and clear any brush.

Consider Digging Deeper with Morris Excavating

If you’re a home builder in the area, are you happy with your current excavating service?

Have you considered trying a different company for a job or two? If you happen to be stuck in the rut of ‘going with the flow’, perhaps it’s time to make a call and give someone else a shot.
