Just how much would you be willing to spend on signature perfumes? Authentic and original fragrances do come at a price, but did you know that prices can escalate to as much as a million dollars?

Such an investment would be considered absurd by most people, and indeed this is an extreme example. But for those who can afford the most expensive perfumes, it’s all about the quality and exclusivity of the product. Just as someone wealthy may spend money on designer bags or clothing, they may also treat lavish perfumes as a luxury investment.

If you’ve ever wondered what the world’s most expensive perfume is and how much it would cost, we’re here to offer you some insight. Let’s take a look at some of the highest-priced fragrances now and throughout history.

What’s so Special about the Most Expensive Perfumes?

Luxury niche fragrances don’t have to cost a fortune, but they can. The perfume price typically reflects either the quality of the ingredients found in the bottle, the ornaments that adorn the outside or the expertise of the master perfumer who created the scent. If you want to buy a custom fragrance, these can cost thousands, especially if you’re looking for an illustrious perfumer to concoct your signature scent.

Even perfumes that aren’t custom made can be expensive — if they contain scarce natural ingredients, for example, this will push the price up considerably. Natural jasmine, Bulgarian rose, ambergris and orris root are all examples of costly ingredients.

So, What Is the Most Expensive Perfume in the World?

1. DKNY Golden Delicious Million Dollar

How on earth could this perfume cost $1,000,000? Well, if you consider the fact that it comes in an apple-shaped, 14-carat yellow and white gold bottle, together with gems that were meticulously applied by hand to mimic the New York City skyline, then perhaps it’s easier to justify the price. Among the gems are 2,700 white diamonds, 183 golden yellow sapphires, a 1.65-carat Turquoise Paraiba Tourmaline from Brazil and a yellow canary diamond atop the bottle’s cap. It took nearly 1,500 hours to create this stunning piece of art, which sold at a charity auction in 2011 for $1 million.

2. Clive Christian №1 Passant Guardant

Another expensive perfume worth mentioning here is the Clive Christian №1 Passant Guardant. Released in 2014 in honour of Clive Christian’s new store, this perfume comes in a magnificently decorated crystal bottle, handcrafted with 24-carat gold lattice-work. The bottle also features a heraldic crest from Clive Christian’s coat of arms and is complete with 2000 individually set flawless white diamonds. №1 Passant Guardant costs approximately $250,000 an ounce, with a stunning bottle that’s an opulent homage to the fragrance within.

3. Clive Christian Imperial Majesty

Imperial Majesty is another fragrance from a UK-based luxury perfume house, Clive Christian. This decadent perfume comes in a polished crystal bottle with an 18-carat gold collar, complete with a five-carat white diamond nestled within. Inside this Baccarat crystal flacon is 500ml of absolute perfume oil. Clive Christian Imperial Majesty retailed back in 2005 for £115,000 (then $205,000) per 500ml and holds the official Guinness World Record for the most expensive commercially available perfume. Only ten bottles were made.

4. Baccarat Les Larmes Sacrees de Thebes

This perfume was initially released in 1998 by Les Larmes and Baccarat. The Baccarat Les Larmes Sacrees de Thebes perfume is presented in a beautiful pyramid-shaped crystal bottle. The fragrance itself contains luxury ingredients of amber, jasmine, sandalwood, musk, ylang-ylang and myrrh. The perfume was inspired by Egypt and King Tut’s tomb and is priced at around $6,800 per ounce. Les Larmes Sacrees de Thebes was one of three limited-edition Baccarat fragrances released in 1998, and this one is the rarest and most valuable.

5. The Spirit of Dubai SHUMUKH

In 2019, The Spirit of Dubai Parfums by Nabeel unveiled SHUMUKH, a luxurious unisex perfume valued at $1.295 million. This one-of-a-kind piece tells the story of the great Emirate through seven core design elements and is adorned with 3,571 diamonds, making it the most diamonds set on a perfume bottle. The bottle holds 3 litres of perfume, with the fragrance itself composed of the finest natural ingredients, including amber, sandalwood, musk, Indian agarwood, pure Turkish rose, patchouli, ylang-ylang and frankincense.

This exclusive Chanel perfume is the most affordable of the fragrances listed here and is priced at $6900 for a 900ml bottle. But it’s still a lot more expensive than your average perfume. This is the iconic Chanel N°5 in its rarest form, presented in a deluxe size collectible bottle that comes nestled in a white satin-lined case.

So, how much of a perfume enthusiast are you, and how much would you be willing to spend on these luxurious fragrances? Would you buy the most expensive perfume in the world if you could afford it?
