The Hate That Keeps On Hating:
My husband grew up in Berkeley, CA. For him, protests are run of the mill. But me? I grew up in Compton, CA. and Carson, CA. In my neighborhood, the number 1 rule was: “If you see someone getting so fired up that violence might break out, get the hell out of there.”
This is a long way of saying that I don’t go to protests. But, I went to my first protest today, the “San Francisco United Against Hate Rally” at City Hall. Why did I go? It wasn’t because I agree with everyone who was there. In fact, in addition to protesting the Nazis, I am in disagreement with some people in my very own group.

As my friend Kanye said: “Racism is the hate that keeps on hating.” When I watched my 16 year-old brother get chased by the police into our home even though he committed no crime other than the crime of being black, I know the impact of that. I know that hurt didn’t go away. It kept on giving. So, in my own anti-hate group, you better believe that there were some people with hate in their heart. The hate that keeps on hating.
And this is why I went to the protest. I went to help break the cycle. Martin Luther King said Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. We are in an ongoing war between the haters and the people who hate haters. When will we stop recycling the old pain, the old violence and the old racism?

I am calling for Unconditional Love. The way to stop someone from hating is to make them feel the love. Even if you don’t feel their love coming back (and you probably won’t), keep on loving.
Nope, Not Today Satan!
