A story in pictures
Visiting a new place for the first time can be overwhelming. So many places to see, so little time. My mantra is explore the city and get lost without having a checklist. Yet I love learning more about the places that I am going to visit beforehand.
If you need some travel inspiration for your next journey to Munich, here are some ideas:
Tram #19
When I first arrived in Munich, I was using the tram to explore the city. It was a bit like hop-on hop-off tour. If you have more time on your hands, it is definitely a good idea. Take the tram from Hauptbahnof (Central Station) towards Ostbahnhof. It is the perfect route for sightseeing. Places like Stachus, Maxmonument, the famous Maximilianstraße and the Landtag of Bavaria (pictured below) are only a short distance away from the tram stop.
Asam Church (Asamkirche)
Many visitors miss the church because it is a small one and the area of Sendlingerstraße is primarily known for its shops. It is a hidden gem and you won’t regret spending some time inside. It is one of the main representatives of the southern German Late Baroque. Actually, it is very easy to reach it since it is close to the underground station Sendlinger Tor.
Nymphenburg Palace
This palace, also known as Schloss Nymphenburg in German, was the summer residence of the Bavarian kings. It is a must-see, especially in good weather, because of its beautiful gardens. In the summer there are gondola rides offered on the central canal, something that I want to experience in 2016.
Englischer Garten — Bike Tour
The English Garden (Englischer Garten in German) is one of the largest urban parks in the world. It is larger than the Central Park in New York. The best way to explore ca. 75 km of awesomeness is on a bike. You can come up with your own route or join one of the many bike tours offered in Munich.
