The future of mobility? part 01
Cars have been an important part of my life, I grew up admiring the lines of vehicles, I always wanted to be an automotive designer, I went to Industrial Design school to design cars, but I got disenchanted with the whole subject, it felt a bit superficial at the time; without realizing how transportation influences the dynamic of a society, contamination, people’s stress and so many other things. Not that superficial after all…
Since then I got more invested in alternative ways of living, innovative products that improve quality of life, green solutions, technology, usability, minimalism etc. I learned that life is better if I own just what’s necessary to live and do the things I like, and not clutter my life with stuff I don’t need. Now I design with that philosophy, always asking myself: “will this idea really add value to the user?” “Is it worth the weight that I’m going to add to his/her life?”
Anyway, I have a long-term goal to “redesign life” creating better experiences, while being conscious about sustainability. A critical part of that redesign is transportation and that’s what I want to do here.
There is an imminent shift on transportation design, and the sooner it happens the better. Environmentalists keep saying that if we keep doing things the same way we are doing them now; in less than 20 years the damages will be irreversible and very likely affect humans.
Transportation has a huge impact on the environment and besides innovating with cleaner energy alternatives, we need to streamline car design, cars need to be lighter and smaller, many cities can’t afford to expand the streets so the next obvious choice is to make cars smaller. We need to get rid of everything that’s not necessary while at the same time, create an experience that is as good or better that the current one. Most people are not going to buy a green car if it’s ugly, uncomfortable or limited in some way; instead, how many more people would buy it if, besides being green and cool, has some other added benefits like customization, adaptability, better service experience, and such?
That’s what I’m aiming to create, here are a couple drawings, I will keep adding more as I create more content:
