After three action-packed years I am sad to say goodbye to one of the best jobs, and greatest teams, in journalism. Storyful has grown and prospered beyond all our expectations and it was a privilege to be a part of that success story. It was a pleasure to serve with some old friends there, and to meet many new ones. With News Corp’s backing, that team is being strengthened and exhorted to new heights and I’m sure they will do great things. I only wish I could be in two places at once!
Having met and worked with some of the best people in the industry over the past 17 years — as colleagues, clients and collaborators — I am also bidding farewell to journalism. It feels like I am leaving it in good shape. The news industry is becoming more relevant, more useful, and more open every day. Hopefully I helped.
From next week, I will be taking up an investigative role at the International Criminal Court. A return trip to Dublin City University was a critical step along the way, providing a valuable frame of reference. The verification skills learned at Storyful also pointed me towards this new role. In many contexts what we dissected for our news clients was not just content, it was evidence.
Journalism, as ever, is powered by the latest information technology and often shaped by those who embrace it, but its beating heart is a group of dedicated workers upholding a shared set of values across many mediums and in many environments.
It has been an honour to call myself one of you.
