Creating a design team from the ground up is a thrilling prospect but can also be daunting. Yet, with the proper method, you can establish a team that’s both proficient and harmonious. Based on my experiences, here is some wisdom I’ve collected on assembling an effective design team.

When introducing experience design into an existing product team, in most cases, everyone in the team, including engineers, product managers, project managers, and business stakeholders, wants to improve their product. Therefore, starting by being as inclusive as possible with your existing cross-functional team is essential. By running collaborative design sessions, you invite all interested parties to sketch ideas with you.

As you tackle the interviewing process, it’s wise to involve some of your team members in the hiring process. This will help them better understand the qualities that make a good designer and ensure their cooperation as you onboard the new team members. In addition, giving them a say in hiring decisions will foster a sense of ownership and shared responsibility for the team’s success.

Be aware each new hire can make or break your team’s success. With a limited headcount, it’s crucial to make every addition count. One way to mitigate this risk is to tap into your network and hire people you know or those recommended by trusted sources. This strategy reduces the likelihood of bringing in someone who may disrupt your team’s cohesion or undermine your progress.

Design is a vast and multifaceted field; no designer can excel in every aspect. It’s crucial to be mindful of this when building your design team. Instead of seeking out individuals who share the same skillset as you, consider crafting a team that brings diverse strengths and expertise. Doing so allows you to fill any gaps in your skillset and create a dynamic team to tackle any design challenge. For instance, you can recruit visual design, user research, or interaction design experts to complement your strengths.

As you set out to build a new design team, it’s important to bear in mind that someone in your network may have already charted this path. Leveraging expertise and seeking collaboration can be invaluable, particularly when navigating the complex landscape of diverse corporate cultures and office politics. By tapping into the insights and experiences of trusted connections, you can make informed decisions more quickly and efficiently.

While the above tips can help you, it’s crucial to acknowledge some limitations. For instance, designing a design team from scratch can be expensive, especially if you’re hiring experts in their field. Also, a small team may have limited bandwidth and be unable to deliver projects as fast as a larger team.

Building a design team from scratch can be exciting and daunting. However, with the right approach, you can build a team that is not only competent but also cohesive. Begin by leveraging the team’s eagerness, hiring individuals within your network, intentionally crafting a team that complements each other’s strengths, staying receptive to new ideas, and acknowledging potential constraints. Employing these techniques could cultivate a team committed to delivering remarkable collaborative work.
