As a developer, I am constantly being challenged with tasks that I’ve never attempted before. Every time I’ve had to do something new, I would think “Man, how the hell am I going to do this?!!”
Eventually I was always able to find a way to complete the task, but the whole process would feel painful and I would feel guilty. I believed I should already know how to do it.
It took me a while to understand that I was wrong. I didn’t need to know how to do it; I just needed to find a way to do it.
If you feel like you should know more than you do today, you are not alone. And that is pretty good, actually, because you will go out of your comfort zone!
People mistake competence with knowledge, but this is what competency actually is:
- Knowing how to do it
- Willingness to do it
- Ability to do it
But the thing is:
To be able to do it,
you don’t have to know how to do it.
Figuring things out is part of our job.
So, here is an invite: expect that every new task will be an unknown challenge. Something that you have never done before. If it is not, you will be just fine. But if it is, you will know that figuring out how to do it is part of your job.
Once you realize this, you will be able to do things you never imagined you could.
Give it a try ☺
