Vesterbro Earth
It is not worth it. Should we forget about it?
This initiative urged in the continuation of nature interpretation topic: composting. Nearly every nature school has a session about worms, decomposers in connection with composting of biodegradable waste.
What is this knowledge worth it, when you do not yet have an option in your house holding at the place where you live, or in the school/institution, where you spent your days?
In front of children you feel the urge of doing something about it.
Vesterbro jord is a core initiative, which highlights the basic dilemma of transition: it is not worth it … yet!
In 2012 we started the initiative with the objective to produce earth of local biodegradable waste with biomass (much of it imported from foreign countries), that is produced in our kitchens. The goal is to at least cover the need of planting earth in urban house holdings (eks. urban balkonys), which at the same time is fossil based imported into our cities. Often with bog sphagnum (forbidden in UK), that is considered as a co2 storage and often represent a biodiversity habitat. Here in Copenhagen it is available for low price. At the same time our biomass is transported to incinerators. Yes, for district heating. But, is this still the best way of dealing with the finite minerals and resources in our biomass?
The sustainable education potential of this theme opens a real pandora's box of interrelated topics.
Vesterbro Jord
Baggrund og problematik: hver eneste dag bliver der kørt tonsvis af organiske næringsstoffer i form af forarbejdet mad: korn, mel, frugt & grønt, kød, … — fortsæt selv: alt det vi spiser — … til København og bliver distribueret bl.a. lokalt på Vesterbro. Og det, der er tilovers, ender ofte i affaldsposen og bliver kørt til forbrænding. Ud over det vi spiser transporterer vi også tonsvis af pottemuld og spagnum i sække til have centre og supermarkeder i København, som nærmest ikke koster noget per enhed.
Det anser vi for at være en normalitet, et socio — teknisk — regime, som vi vil udfordre.
VESTERBRO JORD vil gøre lokal jord tilgængeligt for borgere til bl.a. altankasser, mindre haveprojekter og højbede i daginstitutioner og skoler (ex. Projekt BørneHaven), m.fl.
VESTERBRO JORD gik i startfasen (2012) ud på at producere jord af organisk affald fra caféer, juicebarer, grøntsags forhandlere og andre organisationer omkring Istedgade under mottoet: lokal produceret kompostjord til folket! Reglerne omkring kompostering (Slambekendtgørelsen) og distribution af kompostjord, har i mellemtiden flyttet vores fokus fra at producere og distribuere kompostjord, til at høste og distribuere lokal tilgængeligt overskudjord.
VESTERBRO JORD har haft sin første jordhøst i september 2015. Vi har høstet overskudjord fra Ottilias Have på Carlsberg i 25 genbrugs — høstsække af stilladsplast produceret af Gang i Gaden. Jorden stammer fra en stor bunke jord blandet og leveret til Ottilias have til spiselige planter. Har du brug for pottemuld? — de første tre jordsække med pottemuld står klar under bytteskabet ved Træstubben! Sækken åbnes ved at trække ved en af syningens snore. Filosofien ved at forære jorden væk er indtil videre: reciprok altruisme! — gaveøkonomi!
