Hi Julian.
First, I do like the article but … I don’t think all successful founders were passionate when they first started (at least I hope so).
Passion, you only get by trying and keep going. It isn’t something you are born with. It is something you have to grow. I’m sure you know what I am talking about : your passion for health care is probably bigger now than ever before.
And if your startup is successful, your passion will continue to increase.
When you do something over and over again, every day and you become better at it, eventually you’ll start being passionate about it.
We are both young. It’s hard to know what your passion really is. Personally, I know I want to create something but I’m not sure what it’s gonna be. So I’ll try different things (and be ambitious) and maybe I’ll find something I can be passionate about.
And concerning the next “photo sharing app” …
A startup is always a bad idea at first. If every body directly understands what you’re doing, then you’re probably doing it wrong. Good ideas are for big businesses. There is no way a startup can compete.
Let’s make wild bet : the next biggest buy-out will probably be a facebook-like or google-like company.
In fact it already happened : think about Whatsapp. It was shitty idea ! and the founders were probably not passionate about it at first. still.
In fact, Facebook itself was a crappy idea. MySpace was already there. still.
No company is untouchable. Even Facebook, even Google etc. That’s why they keep so much cash by the way.
Personnally, I would agree with you. I would not spend one or two years of my life for an app like these. But you never know what the next big thing is gonna be.
I know some people who are doing stuff like that. But I try not to judge because indeed, they are “real” entrepreneurs too. They now it’s almost impossible that their app works, but if it does, there is no doubt it’s going to be huge.
And if they finally get traction, beyond their expectations, it’s highly plausible that they become passionate about it.
Greetings,
