I used to publish quite a bit on Medium because I loved the interface and my initial belief that I could really find a community here separate from my blog, where I host most of my writing. My problem with Medium is that if you’re not “blog famous”, featured by Staff, or promoted by a magazine with a sizable following, you’re forced to build a new audience for a platform that’s not even branded as your own. I write dark, experimental fiction and while I’ve found some good writing here, much of what gets featured or promoted are tired listicles, banal self-help pieces, mixed in with the occasional great NON-FICTION piece. My emphasis on non-fiction is a deliberate one, as I don’t find this to be a place for fiction writers. Also, I saw diminished returns on building an audience from the ground up when I already had a decent audience on my blog and other social platforms. It just felt like I was doing more work for Medium as a platform that myself as a writer.
