Eating My First Big Mac

I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, but as someone who grew up buying chicken legs from the bodega for a dollar, who subsisted one summer on bags of potatoes, and thought of McDonald’s as a luxury, I was deeply offended by this piece and how you deigned to eat fast food as an experiment. I grew up poor but now I’m deeply privileged to be able to eat organic, travel, etc, and I don’t take any of it for granted because I know exactly what it’s like to live without. There are so many families who can’t afford McDonald’s, or it’s the only way they can feed their family on a budget, which made this piece so deeply insensitive. And there’s no romancing that (or an immigrant’s halcyon view of what’s American) in a piece on Medium. Perhaps you should’ve acknowledged your privilege from the onset and give due respect to those who are struggling, but strive to live their life with the dignity that this piece sorely lacks.
